Clun itself is an ancient settlement, complete with castle remains, museum, meandering river with 14th century packhorse bridge, almshouses and town square. It has an eclectic range of shops, galleries, pubs and cafes, as well as quiet corners to sit and absorb the atmosphere of this truly quintessential Marches village.
There are many interesting and varied walks from Clun, from just walking around the village itself with all its points of interest, to venturing further afield into woods and tracks, discovering places such as Bury Ditches or Offa’s Dyke.
Clun is fortunate to still have two very good pubs, each with their own unique characters and producing good beers and good food too!
The two cafe’s do afternoon teas and light lunches, in fact you could stay in Clun all day and be well catered for!
Bishops Castle is Clun’s nearest small town and has a swimming pool, banks, library and an excellent range of interesting shops. From second hand book shops specialising in used classical records and CDs to a well stocked delicatessen, antiques, gallery, several pubs and cafes. Well worth a visit, this little market town with its proud history of brewing has an 18th Century Town Hall which is a venue for markets and exhibitions.
Ludlow is reknowned for its food, having several well known restaurants, as well as a stunning town centre full of timbered buildings and a castle which hosts the Ludlow Festival each summer.
At Craven Arms there is Micky Millers Playbarn for those who are young – a good option for a wet day. There is also the Shropshire Discovery Centre and nearby Stokesay Castle.
